Eckhart Tolle
Eckhart Tolle explores how confronting mortality and the impermanence of the physical body can help dissolve the ego's fear of death. By shifting focus away from physical identification, individuals can connect with a deeper, non-physical sense of being.

“Which part of this describes you right now — and what will you do with it?”

In some Buddhist traditions, monks go to the morgue. They sit among the bodies and meditate there for hours. Westerners tend to find that macabre. Eckhart Tolle explains why it is done, and the reason is not morbid at all. Seeing how temporary the physical form is loosens your identification with it, and what remains when that grip loosens is the part of you that is not physical. He describes the effect as deepening, and says he has always loved the practice. The ego finds all of this unbearable, of course. It says I am this body, so I am going to die, and how could the world continue without me. That is the voice doing the fearing, and it is worth knowing that it is only one part of you speaking. There is also a line often attributed to Mark Twain, though nobody has ever traced it to anything he wrote. He said he had no fear of death, because he had already been dead for millions of years before he was born and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it. Which is worth sitting with. Was it terrible, before you existed? You can take that at face value, or you can read something deeper into it. Either way the symmetry is hard to argue with. And none of this requires a morgue. If you have ever sat with someone who was dying, or come close to it yourself, you already know it can change you, if you can let yourself be there for it rather than away from it.
