A boring experiment worth doing once | Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle

Eckhart Tolle explores how fixating on the illusion of the future postpones true living and burdens individuals with an exhausting mental narrative. By contrasting human overthinking with the unburdened presence of animals, he invites viewers to detach from their internal stories and anchor themselves in the present.

Which part of this describes you right now — and what will you do with it?

The future does not exist. Eckhart Tolle knows how that sounds, and he is careful about it. He is not asking anyone to believe him. He is asking you to check, in your own life, whether you can find it. The reason it matters is that most people live there. The present is unsatisfactory, the past was disappointing, so attention moves forward. When this changes, when that arrives, when the situation resolves, then it will be all right. That is what hope is, and hope of that kind quietly postpones your life to a place you can never reach. There is a second edge to it as well. The future promises, and it also takes. It ages the body, it removes things, and eventually it removes you. Up to a certain age it looks like an ally, and later it stops looking like one. Underneath all of this sits something he describes precisely. Thoughts accumulate and harden into a narrative, and the narrative becomes the story of me. My life. Most people carry that story everywhere without ever noticing its weight, and it is heavier than anything actually happening to them. Then he offers a comparison that lands immediately. Look at a dog. There is no self there, and so no story, and so no problem with being whatever it happens to be. Nothing to defend, nothing to improve, nothing being narrated. Just an animal, entirely here. Eckhart goes much further into this in the full session.
