Can't be trusted. She didn't feel safe with me. I sat there thinking, I'm the good one here. You're the one who's angry, you're the one throwing things, I'm the one holding everything together. She was right and I was wrong. I wasn't trustworthy. I had a lie coach in my head telling me what to leave out and how to tell it so nobody got upset. I still catch him working. You hear it constantly in couples therapy. She says I don't feel safe with him, and he says what are you talking about, I've never hit you, I don't yell at you. So we are not talking about physical safety. Women do not feel secure on this planet, and most men have no idea. Here is what I ask men. Do you feel safe walking in your neighborhood at night? Most of us say yeah, I'm fine. Now go ask a woman the same question, and then ask her about the daytime. You will be surprised how many say not really. I'm not going to tell you men are all bad and it's toxic masculinity. But we have done great harm to women, and we've done it without even realizing we've done it. David Deida described it as a big flipper on the front of us. Every time we move, it smacks her across the face. Women have one too and they don't know they have it. That's why we all feel wounded by each other and none of us can point to when it happened. Nobody is claiming the higher ground here. Women hurt men, men hurt women, and when I asked women in therapy why they kept doing the thing they knew was hurting their partner, the answer was always the same. I don't know. I can't help myself. Blame doesn't shed light on any of it. Consciousness does. If you brought my wife on right now and asked her what I've done this week that hurt her, she could name half a dozen things I never noticed doing. ▶ New videos weekly.
