Insurance coverage shapes reproductive health decisions for both men and women. While the ACA requires plans to cover most forms of contraception for women without cost-sharing, vasectomy faces no such requirement—despite being equally or more effective and cost-effective. The steep upfront of a vasectomy cost creates an unintended economic incentive for couples to choose other contraceptive methods instead. It also signals to people that reproductive health is a women’s concern, when really it should be more equal.
