Sean Hotchkiss spent years as a journalist at GQ, Esquire and Men's Health before he left to become a men's coach. Hating Women is his first book, and it is a memoir. That is why I wanted him on this call. Even if nobody else on the call has had negative issues around women, I have. Most men have, and most men will not say it out loud. We get into the summer he spent seeing red after a breakup, the months he lived in an ashram where every woman he passed in the hallway had his mother's face, and the morning he stopped lying to himself about it. I tell him about my own rage work up in Whistler, a couple of weeks after my second wife's affair, while I was finishing No More Mr. Nice Guy. Then we get to the part that surprised me. I am 54% of the way through his book, and I would tell you it is not a book about how to stop hating women. It is a book about finding a men's group and a mentor and starting to be vulnerable with other men. A man's rage at women has almost nothing to do with women. It is far more closely related to his wounded relationship with his father. I have been a marriage therapist for over 45 years. I used to tell every couple who walked into my office that the best thing they could do for their relationship was have good same-sex friends. The women usually do. The men usually don't. And when a man does meet a woman, the men are the first thing he drops. This is part one of a two-part conversation.
